Cynthia Rylant creates a very realistic story ¨Checkouts¨, envolving the feelings of two teenagers and how they act when a situation of love arises.
The story is realistic because the characters responses when they first meet each other are very similar to what happens in real life .
For example when they first meet, the boy was really ashamed, and the girl couldn´t even look into his eyes. All this kinds of reactions happen in real life , the teenagers of real life are very shy and timid when a love situatios comes, and they always spect that the other person makes the first step and talk. You could see this happen in the story, when the girl and the boy see each other for the first time, they are really curious for one an other but they don't do anything about it, they just wait and hope that one would have the courage to speak.
The characters feelings are so realistic, that theres not any point of the story were those feelings explote or make the plot more interesting.
when they see for the fist time, they gat madly in love with each other weirdnesses. For example, the boy was amazed with the girl´s orange hair and her giant orange bow, the girl knew she was in love with him when he dropped her jar of mayonnaise. They were very amazed with one another but they never really talk or share anything, so this made the plot a little boring.
In my opinion i think we can't judge Cynthia for not making the plot more interesting, or neither the character feelings and actions because what she really wanted was a realistic story were it showed what constantly happens in real life, with teenage boys and girls that never have the real courage to show their emotions, and she just wanted to make a very simple story of were this two kids have the opportunity to make a friendship or many more than that, but they never get to know each other well enough.
